ABOUT US
We are a bilingual, non-profit agency contracted by the Department of Health and Wellness. Our mandate is to provide home support services to our clients in their own homes by our fully trained Continuing Care Assistants and Home Support Aids. Our service area is the Digby County which includes Digby Neck and Digby Islands, Digby town/municipality, Weymouth, and Clare municipality.
OUR STORY
The Municipality of Clare, along with the Department of Community Services, began a "Homemaker Service" in the mid 1970’s. They employed a total of two people who worked five days per week, Monday to Friday.
In 1983, two more people joined the team.
For the next five years, the agency ran with 4 employees until 1988, when increased demand necessitated that services be expanded.
With this growth, the need for additional funding was apparent. A plan was initiated to split the cost between the Town of Digby, the Municipality of Digby and the Department of Community Services. Approximately 7 Home Support Workers were serving clients at this time.
As home care services expanded Nova Scotia, new guidelines were implemented; including a requirement for a supervisor who was available to staff on a full-time basis.
At that time, the home care support agencies in the counties of Digby and Clare were small enough that each agency retained an Agency Director/Supervisor who worked part time. Because of this, neither county was compliant in meeting the new guidelines.
In order to address this, working along side with the province, both municipal councils decided to amalgamate the Digby and Clare offices.
In February 1996, the Agency became Digby/Clare Home Support – Agence de Soutien a Domicile.
In 1995, Digby Clare Home Support Agency became fully funded by the Government of Nova Scotia. The Municipalities governing the Agency decided that both the agency and the community it serves would better have the ability to address local care requirements, by a community Board of Governors. The Agency became a private agency governed by a Board of Directors, on November 2, 1998.
We proudly provide approximately 4,500 direct service hours and 3,500 home visits per month. Our staff has also grown to a total of 48 home support workers and nine office staff.
In the Spring of 2024, we expanded our services by providing an Adult Day Program from Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm, offering continuous community engagement and enrichment to our qualifying clients.
Helping to reduce food insecurity in our communities, we recently partnered with the VON and their Frozen Favorites food program. Monthly, we
