Who We Are
We are a bilingual, non-profit agency contracted by the Department of Health and Wellness. Our mandate is to provide home support services to our clients in their own homes by our fully trained Continuing Care Assistants and Home Support Aids.
Our service area is the Digby County which includes Digby Neck and Digby Islands, Digby town/municipality, Weymouth, and Clare municipality.
Our Story
In the mid-1970s the Municipality of Clare and the Department of Community Services started a Homemaker Service with two staff working Monday to Friday. In 1983 two more staff joined, and the agency had four employees until 1988 when growing demand required expansion.
A cost-sharing plan was made between the Town of Digby, the Municipality of Digby and the Department of Community Services. About seven Home Support Workers were then serving clients.
As home care grew across Nova Scotia, new rules required a full-time supervisor. Digby and Clare each had part-time Agency Director/Supervisors and did not meet the new standard. To comply, the two municipal councils agreed to merge the Digby and Clare offices.
In February 1996 the agency became Digby/Clare Home Support – Agence de Soutien à Domicile. In 1995 Digby Clare Home Support Agency became fully funded by the Government of Nova Scotia, and the municipalities decided a community Board of Governors would better address local care needs. The Agency became a private, board‑run agency on November 2, 1998.
We now provide about 4,500 service hours and 3,500 home visits each month. Our team includes 48 home support workers and nine office staff.
Since spring 2024 we added an Adult Day Program, Monday–Friday, 9:00–15:00.
We also partner with VON’s Frozen Favourites program to help reduce local food insecurity.
